Louis de Broglie – Working ‘Hand in Hand With Industry’

The mission of ECAM RENNES – Louis de Broglie Engineering School is :

  • to highlight the ’essential role of man’ within the company,
  • to help the students understand the ‘how to’ of managing a project, a team, a company,
  • to know and understand those things that can hinder or undermine a successful project,
  • to teach the importance of teamwork as a factor in helping a person and/or a company achieve its goals.

Working ‘hand in hand’ with Industry means : that industry constantly serves as a model during the student’s course work in the school. In addition, we place great importance on the re-reading of the reports the student write (detailing their experience) upon returning from a traineeship within a company. That is why we pay particular attention to the preparation and the debriefing of these work experiences from the first year of the student’s studies, to their final courses before entering the professional world.

Learning to observe, to interpret, to give meaning to what you have seen and experienced and the ability to create links between what is happening within the company vs. what is happening around them in the world are important elements in what we try to teach here at the school. As engineers, our students need to realize that there are many ways of learning, managing and “leading teams”. By using instructors from industry coupled with the student traineeships we are able to begin to develop an appreciation and understanding within our students of : who the client is, what his needs are, work patterns and flows within the company, team work, choice of solutions, role of management, etc.,…)

Technical internship

Technical internship : During this traineeship the student engineer is assigned to a position of responsibility and must work autonomously with the technical tools of the trade. Their goal is to learn how to deal with a specific mission (reformulation of client’s demands, writing up specification forms, choice of a technical solution, presentation of results, etc….). A way to test and deepen the knowledge that they are beginning to master while in contact with the industrial world.

Commercial course

This course permits the student to become aware of the financial restrictions with which he will certainly be affronted during his career. Here he is placed in a negotiating context with a client, and he must test the demanding realities of sales and after sales services.

Engineering Traineeships

Engineering internship : In their third year every student must carry out a four to eighteen month engineering internship (as an apprentice engineer) which is an integral part of their schooling. This is where they put into practice all the knowledge and technical experience acquired during their program of study.

Foreign Internship

Foreign Internship : Every student during his/her schooling must complete a foreign experience internship. This can be done during one or another of the above traineeships. Great importance is placed on the student’s understanding of what is like to work and live in a foreign culture. All traineeships (completed by the students) must be accompanied by a report detailing their experience, observations, technical analysis and assessment of their work, followed by an oral presentation/defence of their experience.
